Page 8 vit’ in the Enghth Chapter. ‘The Ninth Chapter contains 29 stanz1s and deals with Raya yoga and Punya yoga The Tenth Chapter, devoted to Maraka or death, gives a number of smportint combinations which enable one to predict the periods and sub periods under which one’s death ts hkely to happea The Eleventh Chapter gives information about the results of Dasa (Mahadasaphata) The principles adum brited here are no doubt consistent with the general cinnons of Parasari system, but certain combinations appear to be appareatly contrdictory and not explamable according to the general rules of Dasa mterpretation I have found such combinations workable 1m the majority of eases in actual practice To give an illustration, Stanza 26 of the Eleventh Chapter suggests that one becomes tmd in the course of Rabu Dasa if Mercury 1s inthe 3rd house Wht Reahu has to do with Mercury in such a combination I cannot say The tlurd is the house of courage and Mercury beng an mpotent planet, his situation im the third mdicates want of courage But why durmg the Dasa af Rahn, the subject should loose courage when Mercury 1 in the third 15 not understandable You will however find that even the most courageous person becomes somewhat timid in the bkukthi of Mercury ducing Rabu Dasa ‘This, of course 1s my own observation ‘The Twelfth Chapter deals with “Ordinary Combinations" (Grahasamanya yoga) and gives combinations which would add vitality to the ‘various bhavas and which would render the bhavas weak The Thirteenth Chapter deals sith Malika yoga or combinations which would be formed by the disposition of planets 1 the fashion of a garland or wreath commencing from the Lagna and different houses ‘The last coc Fousteenth Chapter gives the elements of astrology such as planetary ownersbips, exaltations, friendships, exmities ete Thus st will be seen that the author has surveyed the entire field of Plialabiaga or predictive astrology ia & comprehensive and yet concise manger, his treatment of certaun bhavas such as the fifth house being rather meagre As regards the auth the only evidences availabl ravocation at the beginning part of each chapter from ‘or, his parentage and his place, le ate the two stanzas following the ig of the book and the conchudig whith we gather the information ## Page 9 a that ke 1s the som of Sree Bhasyam Jagannatharya (whos lughly leatned in astrology, a gem among scholars and well versed 1n Agamias) residing m the Mahakshetra of Mangaladit and belonging to the Bharadvaja gotta The name of the auther 1s given at the end of each chapter as Sree Rama ngjacharya, who I am inched to think 15 none otlier than the great Visishitadwanta philosopher, C15 a fashion with many of the ortental scholars—beth Indian and H:uropean—to laugh at the suggestion that astrological works were also composed by poets like Kalidasa and Acharyas hike Sankara and Rama nya Kalidasa the great poet and dramatist has written the frmous Jyotirisdabharene and Uttarckulammte, masterpieces on the astrologieat science, in addition to the achievements in the field of drama In J3otirtidabharana ke has given a description of the fleet of Vikramaditya the Great whose contemporary he was and which fact has been made clear by the following stanza (Vide Joytiry:dabharana) ” DMANUANTHARTIH KSIAPANAROMARASINIIA SAXAU. For a Mesha lagna per; upiter, lord of the 9th and 12th, becomes Maraka if he occupies the 10th house. Slauza. 4 For a. person born in Mesha lagna the mere combination of the lords of the 9th and 1Orh, v2g., Jupiter and Saturn does nop result in Rajayoga: This is certain, ## Page 12 BHAVARTHA RATNAKARA 1. NOTES The author's treatment of the subject is quite com prehensive, interesting and unique ‘The first four stanzas: make clear the following points in respect of persons born 4m Mesha lagna 1 Raya yogais caused by the mere combination of the Jords of the #th and Sth, vrs , the Moon snd the Sun ‘The nature of the Rasa yoga, the extent of its mfluence and other similar detuls are not ‘ehborated by the wuthor so that much skull and experience re necessary on the part of the reader who wishes to apply the principles to actual horoscopes 2 Venus lord of the 2nd and 7th becomes 1 Maraka Parasara says that because Venus happens to be lord of the 2nd and 7th he cannot himself become capable of inflicting death but can become @ Maraka only when he 1s in conjunction with other Narahas such as Mercury and Saturn as Kerweeyaalso gives expression to Parasaras view when at obserses thus © Sukrassakshannahanthasyadstinkerala turuaya meaning that Sura by himself cannot become a Maraka In my bumble experience I have been able t comer across a number of cases in which persons born moMfesh higna have died in the cource of Sukra Dasa 3 Jupiter, lord of the Sth and 12th can become & ‘Maraka if he occupies the 10th house It 1s not clear as to why the author mclines to the view that Jupiter can become a Maraka only when he isin te 10th'bouse Probably the author feels that because Jupiter becomes neecha (debilitated) in the 10th from Mesha he loses allbenefic influences Psrasara on the other hand says that the Sua and Jupiter are benefics for Mecha lagna heraleeya says that Mercury and Saturn become Marakas for Mesh yeaa “twill be seen that an exarmnation ef a number of ## Page 13 BHAVARTHA RATNAKARA 3 horoscopes reveals that Mercury 1s the determinant of death 2s he is lord of the 3rd ard Sth Fn Chart No 1 death occurred in the 20th year of the native, 1 the sub perted of Satum in the major period of Mercury ‘Mercury s power to hill has been fortified by his con junction with Venus ro Sun Vers Mars Rabe 4 ‘The mere combination of Jupiter and Saturn lords of Sth and 10th does not result in a Raja yoga: ‘This view ss also supported by the great Patasara wher hm says that good will not be produced when Jupiter and Saturn ate m conjunction

For Mesha lagna though Sxturn 1s lerd of the 10th he stands blemished because he 1s also the 11th lord The evi as strong enough to vitiate Jupiter the 9th lord when be Innppens to be associated with the With lord Hence the association of Saturn with Jupiter will not confer any yoga, In Chart Ne 2 the native lost bts appointment an Gara Dasa Sant bhukth, though both ate placed in the 5th house aspected by exahed Mars However isatumnt om Mercury's sub period, the position was regained Venus} while death also tock place at the end of Mercury CHART No 2 Mars ## Page 14 4 BHAVARTHA RATNAKARA Stanza 5, A person born when Mesha is rising will have fear from small pox, weapons and wounds So say the learned (an astrology) Stanza 6 If Mars:s in conjunction with the 6th and 8th lords, death eccurs in the course of his Dasa and Bhuhthi, by diseases pertaming to the head Stanza 7i’’For one born 1h Mesha, if the lord of-the.2nd.is in the 12th, he becomes good For those born 1n other lagnas the 2nd lard does not become good if he 1s placed in the 12th Sianga 8 For one born in Mesha lagna Kuya no doubt becomes a Maraka if he 1s in conjunction with Venus, but still he will be capable of causing Yoga also Stanza 9 For a person born in Mesha Jagna Kuja will certainly become a } oga Karaka (conferer of fame) sf he occupies the 2nd house with Jupiter and Venus Stanza 10 Tor one born in Mesha lagna, Kuya does not produce any Yoga if ne occupies the 3rd house with Jupiter and Venus Stanza 11 Kuya will surely become a Yogaharaha for one Who takes his birth m Mesha lagna, f he asim the 4th house combined with Jupiter Stanza 12 For 2 peison born in Mesha lagna, Kuja i the 5th house surely causes yoga an the course of his own dasa ## Page 15 BHAVARTHA RATNAKARA 5 NOTES In the above 8 slohas the author explains the various combinations which render Mars the lord of lagna {«) capable of anflicting death and (8) capable of conferring yoga or fame Summansing the above we find that 1, Death occurs in the Mars Dasa by diseases pertaining to the head if Mars 1s assoctated with Gth and Sth lords. Ttas not clear as to what the author means when he refers to Mars being m association with 8th lord | “Siasnrana- SHTAMANATHEN’ Yurno Bruwi Suro Yapi” Mars 13 himself the 8th iord for Mesha lagna. Consequently the 6th sloka should be taken to mean that when Mars conjoins the 6th iord, deat will be caused sn his Dasa ‘This combination 1s perfectly understandable because, Mars though Lagnadi- prthi can become a Maraha when he 15 1 conjunction with the 6th lord (Mercury) who 1s also the lord of the 3rd. 2 Stanza $ says that Kusa becomes a Maraka, if he 1s tm conjunction with Venus But this does not prevent huja, from conferring Yoga also Chart No 2 given above reveals that Budla did not only give mse to good results during his. dhubths, but infheted death also. Simuiarly,as Lagnadipaths, Iuya can confer beneficial results while as lord of sth in conjunction with lord of the 7th he can cause death also. The way the \arous principles are enumerated clearly reveals the authors profound hnowledge of the vatious technicalities of the astrological science. 3. Stanza 9 says that huja can become Yogaharaka if he issn the 2nd with Jupiter and Venus, while the 10th sloha says that the above yoga gets cancelled if the combination occurs in the 3rd house, Venus 1s lord of the 2nd while Jupiter 1s lord of the 9th Mars 1s lord of lagna, ‘This combination of the lords of lagna, 2nd and 9th 1s certainly indicative of immense wealth and therefore Kuya becomes & Yogtharaka, When this combination occurs im the 3rd. house the potency 1s lost. 4. When Kuya ss ca the 4th (Cancer) with Jopster the former becomes quite capable of conferrmg Yoga, ## Page 16 6 BHAVARTHA RATNAKARA ‘When Kuja 1s m the 4th for a person born in Mesha, the planet becomes debilitated If Jupiter 1s m_ Cancer, where he will be exalted, the Neecha effect of Kuja is cancelled with the result, Lagnadipathi 1s subject to a distmet Neechabhanga Raya Yoga In all these cases Kuya seems to confer more of fame than of matermal possession or wealth Humble as my experience bas been, I have always found Kuja making the ative famous rather than rich 5 According to stanza 12 Kuja confers fame im his Dasa if he 15m the 5th ‘The fifth 1s Leo or Simba—a friendly sign Lagnadhypatht in the Sth is always held to be good, though Paratara and Lomasa say that the native will not have much happiness from cbildzen and that the first child does not hve “Lacnesa PANCHAMA MANEE SUTHASOWANYAMCHA MADHYAMAM «=PRADHAMAPATHYA =aSASYAD RODE RAJAPRAVESAR * ‘Kuya may become a Yogaharaka but may render the native unhappy im respect of chudren 6 Stanza 7 reveals tht only in regard to Mesha lagna Jord of 2nd 1m the 13th 1s good For other lagnas such a disposition of the 2nd lord renders him evil ‘Tins 1s 90 important principle worth noting ard ts rationale ts perfectly understandable Lord of the 2nd from ‘Mesha 1s Sukra, when he is ta the 12th or Meena, he gets exalted and thereby the 2nd lord becomes strong Stanja 13. Fora person born in Mesha, Guru, sn the 11th house cannot give rise to any yoga during his dasa Stanza 14 For one born in Mesha, Budha and Kuya in the 6th will give rse to wounds, shin ## Page 17 BHAVARTHA RATNAKARA 7 eruptions, small pox and the like during their Dasas. Stanza 15. A Person born in Mesha lagna will possess self-earned fortune and some wealth also, if Mars and Venus are in the 7th house. Stanza 16. For one born in Mesha lagna Mars in the 8th house does not produce yoga, he will however confer some fame if he 1s in conjunction with the Sun and Venus Stanza 17. Fos a person born in Mesha Jagna if the Sun and Mars are in the 9th as also Jupiter and Venus, and Saturn is in the 7th, then Mars produces special yoga. Stanza 18 For aperson born in Mesha Jagna, Venus becomes capable of giving rise to yoga provided he is in lagna with the Sun unaspected by Jupiter Stanza 19. Venus aspected by Jupiter will not cettainly confer any Yoga But the Sun aspected by jupiter becomes a yogaharaha. Stanza 20. For a person born in Mesha lagna, if the Sun, Mercury and Venus are in the lith, they wall give rise to fortune during their respective dasas. Stanza 21. Fora person born in Mesha,Raja yoga is caused if the Sun or Moon is in Cancer. «, Stanza 22.
